Vertigo is one of the more common inner ear issues that many people experience. It’s a condition that is characterized by a feeling of being off-balance even if the room that you’re in is completely still. Alongside that you may also experience headaches, anxiety and exhaustion.

Fortunately, there are several different treatments that an ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialist can provide in order to deal with vertigo depending on the root cause of the condition. Here are some of the most common ways in which vertigo is treated:

Antibiotics

One of the most common treatments for vertigo is the use of antibiotics. This is because vertigo can often be caused by an infection of some kind in the inner ear. Most of the time antibiotics will easily clear out the infection relatively quickly.

Diuretics

Another common cause of vertigo is a condition called Meniere’s disease. This is a condition that is thought to be caused by changes in the fluid in tubes of the inner ear. Because of this, a course of diuretics is often prescribed and can be incredibly helpful when treating Meniere’s disease and the resulting vertigo.

Movement exercises

One of the most common varieties of vertigo is what is called benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). This type of vertigo is caused by tiny calcium particles in the ear moving out of place and sticking to the hair cells in the inner ear. This means that they get in the way and interfere with the inner ear’s ability to transmit signals to the brain.

The most common form of treatment of BPPV is a range of movement and exercise programs. These movement and exercise programs can help to shift the calcium particles from the hair cells of the inner ear, restoring your inner ear’s ability to transmit signals to your brain effectively. Movement and exercise programs can also be used to help to retrain the system that conveys your sense of movement and balance.

Surgery

Vertigo can also be caused by the presence of non-cancerous tumors in the inner ear. If this is the case, then it is quite common that the solution to a case of vertigo will have to be surgery to remove the tumor. It’s also possible that surgery could be required in order to drain an infection. Inflammation from infections is another common cause of vertigo and draining the infection can often help to alleviate the symptoms quickly and easily. Surgery is not the most common solution, but it is always a possibility in the event of vertigo symptoms presenting themselves.

If you find yourself experiencing any of the common symptoms of vertigo then the best thing that you can do is to speak to an ear, nose and throat doctor as soon as possible. Vertigo can have a significant negative impact on many people’s lives but often it can be very easily treated so that you can get back to living your life the way that you want as quickly as possible.
